Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruits for the lower grade posts in the government of India’s various offices, secretariat, Parliament, ministries, commissions to positions such as lower division clerks, graduate level auditors, junior accountants, upper division clerks (UDC), divisional accountants, inspectors of income tax/central excise, sub-inspectors in central police organizations and many other posts.
The Staff Selection Commission conducts bulk recruitment examinations regularly every year for jobs to which large number of vacancies generates in the government offices. Some of the positions are Graduate Assistants, Auditing and accounting staff, Clerical positions such as LDCs and UDCs, Inspectors, constables and other officers in the Central police organizations and para-military forces, Section Officers and Stenographers in the Central Secretariat C Group, and many other offices. SSC also conducts isolated interviews for isolated posts after advertising through newspapers and the government periodicals.
The SSC recruits to fill positions under Group B non gazette and non technical group C non gazette positions in the ministries, departments and subordinate offices of the govt. of India, the Comptroller and Auditor General and Accountant General offices, election commission and central vigilance Commission offices. The SSC also selects candidates by way of promotions from Group D categories to the positions the recruitment for which it has jurisdiction, promotion within the span of grade to which it has recruiting powers, etc.

STAFF SELECTION COMMISSION - OVERVIEW
The Staff Selection Commission was constituted according to the recommendations of the Administration Reforms Commission in its report on Personnel Administration in early 1970's. The Staff Selection Commission formulates recruitment policies for the examination schemes and procedure for smooth conduct of selection tests and interviews. The SSC was established to conduct bulk recruitments to the lower positions of government offices for which the qualifications and skills requirement are uniform. In SSC examinations and recruitments the opportunities are allocated to every region, reservations are permitted according to the govt. of India's reservation policy and exams are conducted under each of the regional centre.

Headquartered at Allahabad, SSC Central Region serves the states of Uttar Pradesh (U.P) and Bihar. The Commission's Southern Region is headquartered in Chennai, which is entrusted with the task of recruitment of technical and non technical including Junior Engineers (Civil and Electrical) positions of Groub B and C in the central government offices in Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh. The region has examination centres in Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Hyderabad, Vizag, Warrangal, Guntur, Tirupati, Kurnool, Srikakulam and Rajamundry.

SSC North Eastern Region is headquartered at Guwahati and it serves states of Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. The north Eastern Region makes recruitment of Group C and Group B non gazetted, technical and non technical staff and also shoulders the responsibility of promotion from Group D to LDC, LDC to UDC and from Stenographers grade D to Grade C.
