STAFF SELECTION COMMISSION - OVERVIEW

The Staff Selection Commission was constituted according to the recommendations of the Administration Reforms Commission in its report on Personnel Administration in early 1970's. The Staff Selection Commission formulates recruitment policies for the examination schemes and procedure for smooth conduct of selection tests and interviews. The SSC was established to conduct bulk recruitments to the lower positions of government offices for which the qualifications and skills requirement are uniform. In SSC examinations and recruitments the opportunities are allocated to every region, reservations are permitted according to the govt. of India's reservation policy and exams are conducted under each of the regional centre.

REGIONAL OFFICES OF SSC:

The SSC has nine regional offices at Allahabad, Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Raipur and Chandigarh which are responsible to conduct recruitment process in the surrounding states of each city.

Headquartered at Allahabad, SSC Central Region serves the states of Uttar Pradesh (U.P) and Bihar.  Central Region has examination centres in Allahabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Bareilly, Patna, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur. The Central Region of SSC successfully utilizes information technology for advertising vacancies, administration, application process, candidate services and publication of results.

The Commission's Southern Region is headquartered in Chennai, which is entrusted with the task of recruitment of technical and non technical including Junior Engineers (Civil and Electrical) positions of Groub B and C in the central government offices in Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh.  The region has examination centres in Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Hyderabad, Vizag, Warrangal, Guntur, Tirupati, Kurnool, Srikakulam and Rajamundry.

SSC North Eastern Region is headquartered at Guwahati and it serves states of Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.  The north Eastern Region makes recruitment of Group C and Group B non gazetted, technical and non technical staff and also shoulders the responsibility of promotion from Group D to LDC, LDC to UDC and from Stenographers grade D to Grade C. The North Eastern Region maintains examination centres at Guwahati, Itanagar, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Shillong, Imphal, Aizwal, Kohima and Agartala.

Like every other region, the Eastern Regional of Staff Selection Commission conducts recruitment in Group C and Group B Non-gazatted posts in Ministries and Departments existing in Eastern Region. The regional office is located at Kolkata and serves West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Sikkim and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Karnataka-Kerala Region of Staff Selection Commission is headquartered at Bangalore which serves Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep Islands conducting recruitment examinations and interviews for selection of LDCs, UDCs, Stenographers, Assistants, Inspectors of Central Excise for Central Excise Collectorates and Income Tax Inspectors in the Commissionerate of Income Tax, Preventive Officers, in Custom Department offices, Assistant Enforcement Officers in the Enforcement Directorate, among many others.

Western Region of SSC is centered at Mumbai with territorial jurisdiction of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Daman & Diu. The Western Region is well equipped with Information Technology resources to spread its services even in the far flung areas including vacancy advertisements, receipt and processing of applications, issue of admit cards to candidates, etc.
